Five Year Old Curtains

The new rental is starting to come together. This week we put up an old Target (from the Global Home line - they don't make it anymore) curtain from my dorm at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. (I was there for a summer for a research program.) Here's the bare window (can you tell it's a rental house?):

And now the window with the curtain:

It looks so much more homey in there now that the window has a curtain. The curtain is cream colored with gold accents. It's sorta hard to tell in the picture due to the lighting. Also, the design on the bedspread matches the curtain's design. It has a Moroccan inspired feel to it.

I really love the blue/green color scheme that just happened by accident. The green pillow and green-topped piano bench look great with my boyfriend's Anthropologie comforter on the bed.

Eventually I want to squish the bed over away from the window a bit so I can fit another nightstand in there. Not having a nightstand is a drag!

Boyfriend's Apartment

This past weekend I helped my boyfriend move into his new apartment. We used a lot of our old furniture from our old rental back when we lived together. I also brought him some things from our condo because I don't use everything since I'm usually by myself.

I made a mood board of sorts that contains all of the different rooms in one. The items represent things that I think we should pick up over time as we have the money available in order to fully complete the space. Some of the items (like the stuff I picked out for the deck) are more frivolous and unnecessary than others!

Kitchen
The freezer doesn't have any shelving, so I thought it would be helpful to get some inexpensive wire shelves from The Container Store. I've also added a kitchen towel and small rug to place at the sink.

Bathroom
The bathroom is pretty much finished since we added a shower curtain and towels. It already has a perfectly suitable rug. So, I added a toothbrush holder and q-tip container.

Living Room
The living room needs a bookshelf and a nice upholstered ottoman to use as a coffee table. I also added a candle.

Deck
The deck already has plenty of furniture along with a fire pit that we had at our old rental house. I added outdoor cushions and pillows for the existing furniture, solar-powered string lights from Ikea, and a cute little tea light lantern.

Bedroom
The bedroom is pretty small, but obviously I'm used to that. We have one nightstand, but we could really use another. The current one is 29" tall which is unusually tall for a nightstand, so I actually had to search "telephone stands" or "phone stands" to find something tall enough. The lamp is to use on top of the second nightstand and the little storage bins are for the closet to organize socks.

Here's a list of where I found everything. I "shopped" at Target, World Market, Ikea, and The Container Store.

IKEA Solvinden

IKEA Jonsbo Egby

IKEA Grenö

IKEA Lillholmen

IKEA Särö

Done and Done!

Weeeeee gottttttt ittttttt! Shortly after my post yesterday that I wrote out of pure nervousness in an attempt to distract myself, my boyfriend called me up. He said, "I have a key in my pocket!"

I still haven't seen the place yet, but I have fully stalked it on Google maps.

It does indeed have a supplied washer and dryer and supposedly it is really clean and cute. The landlord's approximation of 500 square feet was way off according to my boyfriend. That comes as a bit of a relief. I was still excited, but 150 fewer feetsies than what we have at our condo is a bit teensies. So no worries in the space department. Unless you count outer space! Aliens! Wait, what?

It has a tiny kitchen with separate bedroom and bathroom. And a laundry room closet thingy. And a bedroom closet. I can't wait to start moving our old furniture in (what we didn't sell on craigslist last summer is in storage right now).

Anyway once I actually see it for myself I will show you too!

Deck with a View

After refreshing craigslist for a solid day since my last post, I found a potential rental! The monthly rent is reasonable and it's close enough to downtown and shopping to be accessible by bike (meaning my boyfriend can still bike to work). Plus it has a dishwasher! Woo hoooooo.

It's a duplex and the landlord lives on site. That could be weird, but it's a great little place overall. I haven't actually seen it yet, but it sounds perfect. It's positively tiny inside according to the listed square footage (I'm used to that!) with a large deck, washer and dryer, and plenty of parking for both of our cars.

The downside is that it has carpet (I prefer hardwood floors) but the upside is that the carpet is brand new. I can't wait to hear back after my boyfriend checks it out. I already have half of the dishes packed up to bring him.

I should probably reel in my high hopes a little bit. Stay tuned!

Finding a Rental

Buying a place to live is a chore, to say the least. I could write for hours and hours about the process. But I really think the most difficult part is the step that comes before buying - finding a place to live.

This week I've been thinking about the differences between finding a house to buy and finding a house to rent. There are loads of differences. For one thing, if you're renting you don't have to consider structural problems or resale ability or property taxes. It seems that for a renter, finding a place is a simple task, but it just isn't. It's a pain to find a suitable rental and I've never enjoyed
the process.

All weekend my boyfriend and I looked for a place for him to live. We looked high and low (as in prices and quality of living) and we didn't find what he is looking for: the perfect balance of price and location and quality.

Throughout my life to this point, I've lived in five different rental properties (that I paid for myself). I found each one of them in a different way:

1. The local newspaper
2. Through a friend
3. A different local newspaper
4. Craigslist
5. Driving around (a sign in the yard)

This just goes to show that there's no one tried-and-true way to find a rental. However, I can say that the best place I've ever lived was #5, which my boyfriend and I found by driving around the city we were looking in until we knew the neighborhoods that were acceptable. Then we drove and drove and drove some more within those parts of town until we saw a rental sign in front of the cutest little house. And
then we aggressively moved to rent said house until it was ours (there was a couple in front of us in line when we first called). Aggressive = being on the landlord's schedule, telling her our checkbook was ready, providing positive references from past landlords quickly, and driving two hours home, two hours back, and two hours home again in the same day just to drop off our application.

So, as you can tell, actually landing a rental once we've found one isn't a problem for us. It's just finding the perfect gem of a house or apartment that's got me stumped this time. There are tons of cute houses and condos in the city I'm helping my boyfriend look in. The problem is that rental prices seem to be inflated compared to what a mortgage costs. Rental rates are nearly twice as high as a mortgage in
most cases. And buying a house seems so much easier in that all of the
nice places seem to be for sale - not for rent. But buying isn't an option right now.

Granted, there are plenty of complexes that offer affordable monthly rates in the area. The thing is that the places just aren't well cared for. Don't get me wrong, I don't look for granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. I just look for a property that I can tell the owner has some pride in. Something clean and respectable. That's difficult to find in a complex because oftentimes the owners live in a different state entirely.

For now, I've got Craigslist on refresh. And this weekend I'm sure we'll be gassing up the car to head out again. I'll let you know if we find any prospects.

Have you ever rented a home? How did you find it?
